Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) CEO Mr. Cornwell Muleya has inaugurated the Board of Directors for Mununshi Fruit Company Limited, continuing with the Corporation’s commitment to its reform agenda across all subsidiaries.
During the inauguration, Mr. Muleya emphasized the crucial role the Board is expected to play in creating an ecosystem of economic activities within Mwense District in Luapula Province, where Mununshi Fruit Company is based.
“In the area where the company operates, everyone is looking at Mununshi as the main economic activity to provide employment and market for various products,” he said, stressing the company’s potential to be a catalyst for local economic development.
The establishment of the Board is a strategic move by the IDC to enhance corporate governance, in line with its broader mandate to improve the operations of its subsidiaries.
Mr. Muleya was confident that the newly appointed Board members would improve the operations of the company based on their competence and experience.
Originally established in 1967 as the Mununshi Banana Scheme, the company was instrumental in diversifying the economy and expanding the industrial sector. However, it faced operational challenges over the years until the IDC acquired the plantation in 2019 to revive it in line with its mandate to expand economic activities in rural areas.
Since acquisition by IDC, the company has had banana harvests since August 2021, creating 30 full-time jobs and over 100 seasonal jobs, primarily benefiting women and youths from the local community.
The newly inaugurated Board members are:
Mr. Emmanuel Imbula
Mr. Mambwe Kaenga
Mr. Oga Sitimela
Ms. Nondo Chilonga
