IDC AND ZAF PARTNER TO BOOST NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY

The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and the Zambia Air Force (ZAF) have formalized a strategic partnership to support national food security through a 10-year lease agreement for the Agro-Luswishi Farm in Lufwanyama District, Copperbelt Province.
The agreement was signed today at ZAF Headquarters in Lusaka by IDC Chief Executive Officer Mr. Cornwell Muleya and ZAF Commander Lieutenant General Oscar M. Nyoni. The collaboration is in response to the directive from His Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, to harness the capacity of defence and security wings in expanding food production following prolonged drought conditions.
Mr. Muleya described the agreement as an important step in IDC’s mission to invest in key economic sectors.
“This is not just a lease, it is a strategic partnership aimed at unlocking Zambia’s agricultural potential, ensuring national food security, and promoting rural industrialisation,” he said.
Lt. Gen. Nyoni noted that ZAF initiated efforts to secure productive land in both Northern and Copperbelt Provinces in line with the presidential directive. The Agro-Luswishi Farm, an IDC flagship agricultural asset, was identified as an ideal site, already equipped for immediate cultivation.
“It was in this context that IDC offered ZAF the Agro Luswishi farm…This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to national food security and sustainable development,” said Lt. Gen. Nyoni.
ZAF assumed control of the farm in March 2024 and commenced winter maize cultivation while continuing site preparations. So far, approximately 100 hectares of white maize have been planted and are currently being harvested, with promising yields.
Looking ahead, ZAF plans to expand cultivation to over 300 hectares in the 2025/2026 farming season to strengthen its contribution to the national food reserve system.
The Agro-Luswishi Farm spans approximately 7,000 hectares and forms part of IDC’s broader agricultural development portfolio focused on enhancing productivity, food security, and inclusive economic growth.
