ZAMBIA DAILY MAIL INNOVATES WITH YOUTH DIGITAL APP AND EXPRESS BUS SERVICE

Zambia Daily Mail has launched two major initiatives aimed at strengthening business sustainability and diversifying its revenue streams through digital innovation and transport services.
The media institution, wholly owned by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) officially unveiled the rebranded Young Mail newspaper, website and mobile application, alongside the launch of the Daily Mail Express Bus Service, which will initially operate on the Lusaka–Solwezi route.
This occasion marks a significant milestone not only for Zambia Daily Mail, but also for IDC, which provides oversight to its subsidiaries for business sustainability.
Speaking during the launch, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Mr. Thabo Kawana described the developments as an important step in demonstrating how public media institutions can adapt to the changing business environment.
“These initiatives demonstrate how a public media institution can innovate, diversify and remain relevant in today’s fast-changing digital economy,” Mr. Kawana said.
He said through both print and digital platforms, Young Mail is expected to provide credible, engaging and accessible content tailored to young audiences. Mr. Kawana added that the initiative aligns with Government’s agenda of promoting youth participation in media while combating misinformation through trusted content.
Mr. Kawana further said the Daily Mail Express Bus Service would strengthen courier and logistics operations, improve newspaper distribution and enhance connectivity along the Lusaka–Solwezi route while creating employment opportunities.
IDC Chief Executive Officer Mr. Cornwell Muleya, in a speech read on his behalf by Ms Sombo Kaweza, Head of Portfolio – Manufacturing and Agriculture, described the transformation as a model of resilience and adaptability among State-owned enterprises.
“As IDC, we view this transformation as a model of resilience and adaptability. It demonstrates that State-owned enterprises can innovate, modernise, diversify and compete effectively,” Mr. Muleya said.
He said the rebranding of Young Mail into a digital-first platform targeting readers aged between 10 and 25 years was both bold and timely.
Zambia Daily Mail Board Chairperson Mr. Belly Dubeka said the initiatives form part of the company’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan aimed at repositioning the institution in a competitive media landscape.
“In this environment, it is no longer business as usual. It is survival of the fittest. Those who innovate and distinguish themselves on the market will thrive,” Mr. Dubeka said.
Acting Managing Director Mrs. Emelda Musonda said Young Mail had been repositioned to promote a strong reading culture and provide educational and inspiring content for young people.
She added that the bus service would strengthen the company’s revenue base and contribute to long-term institutional sustainability beyond traditional newspaper operations.
