The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has handed over a donation of medical equipment to Mphangwe Health Post in Katete as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at improving the lives of local communities.
The donation, valued at over K85,000, was officially handed over by IDC Acting Chief Corporate Services Officer, Ms. Namakau Mukelabai, during a ceremony attended by Katete District Commissioner Mr. Raphael Phiri and Acting District Health Director Dr. Makungu Makungu.
The equipment includes three examination beds, three bedside privacy screens, two medicine trolleys, a digital blood pressure machine, two adult weighing scales, a steel medicine cupboard, and two water storage drums.
Ms. Mukelabai emphasized IDC’s commitment to supporting communities beyond its core business operations.
“Through our Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, we aim to address critical community needs and be a positive force for change,” she said. “In our 2024-2035 Strategic Plan, we have made a clear commitment to invest in the communities we serve.”
She said the donation represented the first phase of IDC’s CSR initiative at the facility, which focused on meeting the immediate equipment needs of the health post.
IDC is now seeking partners to help implement next phase, which involves the construction of a new clinic. Mphangwe Health Post, which serves over 9,800 people, was built in 1944 and has experienced significant infrastructure deterioration.
Ms. Mukelabai also commended the dedication of the healthcare workers at the facility and underscored IDC’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that everyone in the community has access to quality healthcare.
Katete District Commissioner Mr. Raphael Phiri expressed his gratitude to IDC, noting the importance of partnerships in strengthening the healthcare system.
“IDC is already showing its care for the local community before even starting operations. We can only expect more benefits once their investment, the Eastern Tropical Fruits Processing facility, is commissioned,” Mr. Phiri said, referring to the upcoming IDC project set to launch soon in the district.
