A POSITIVE TURNAROUND OF THE ZAMBIA-CHINA MULUNGUSHI TEXTILES TO BENEFIT OVER 120 THOUSAND COTTON FARMERS-IDC

The Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Chief Executive Officer Mr. Cornwell Muleya says a positive turnaround of the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles will benefit over 120 thousand cotton farmers across the country and the local people in Kabwe .
Speaking during the tour of the factory which is currently being renovated in readiness for its reopening, Mr. Muleya said the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles has great potential to provide the much-needed employment opportunities for the people of Kabwe and surrounding areas.
He added that aside from direct benefits for the workforce, the company will promote value addition to the cotton production which will in turn benefit local farmers growing cotton across the county.
“The benefits of establishing a textile plant such as this one are many and these will contribute to the creation of wealth as our country will reduce its reliance on imported materials which in turn will enhance self-sufficiency and significantly contribute to the promotion of exports to the neighbouring countries,” Mr Muleya said.
Meanwhile, the Zambia-China Mulungushi Textiles General Manager, Brigadier General Emmauel Simeti disclosed that once the renovations are completed, the factory will employ over 100 workers to start operations, and this number is expected to grow when the plant is fully operational.
The factory then known as Mulungushi Textiles which ceased operations in January 2007, is set to be reopened this year once the renovations are done and the new equipment installation is completed.
