ZAMBIA’S LARGEST EMERALD DISCOVERY

In the photo is 𝘐𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘰 (“buffalo”), the largest single gemstone ever unearthed at Kagem Mine, weighing 2.337 kilograms – equivalent to 11,685 carats.

𝘐𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘰 was discovered on 3 August 2025 in Kagem’s Chama pit by geologist Dharanidhar Seth, a seasoned expert with more than a decade of experience, alongside Justin Banda, a veteran chiseller renowned for his skill in carefully freeing rare gems from their host rock.

This exceptional emerald will be offered at Kagem’s upcoming high-quality auction, scheduled to run from 25 August to 11 September 2025. All proceeds from the sale will be fully repatriated to Zambia.

Kagem, the world’s single largest producing emerald mine, is 75% owned by Gemfields while 25% is owned by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC).

“In my thirty years at Kagem, I have rarely encountered such a remarkable formation of large, high-quality crystals,” said Jackson Mtonga, Grading Manager – Sort House at Kagem.

Over the years, Kagem has earned a global reputation for recovering some of the world’s most iconic emeralds. These include the 6,225-carat 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘧𝘶 (“elephant”, 2010), the 5,655-carat 𝘐𝘯𝘬𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘶 (“lion”, 2018), and the 7,525-carat 𝘊𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘦 (“rhino”, 2021). With its staggering weight of 2.337 kilograms, 𝘐𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘰 now stands as the largest single emerald of exceptional quality ever discovered at Kagem to date.
