PRESIDENT Edgar Lungu has directed the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) Zambia to quickly develop at least 600 megawatts (MW) of solar power to help mitigate the country’s electricity shortage.

President Lungu, who is also the board chairperson of IDC Zambia, said Government is determined to find lasting solutions to the power crisis.

“We are resolved to address the current hydro-power shortages caused by low rainfall through active promotion and increased use of renewable energy technologies,” President Lungu said in a statement released yesterday by the IFC.

Meanwhile, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank and IDC Zambia have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the development of two independent 50MW solar power projects in Zambia through the Scaling Solar programme.
